The above image was created in part using a technique I haven’t seen anywhere else.  It’s the technique used in the above image to create those puffy billows that come out from behind the letters.  In essence it’s a technique to easily create the appearance of 3D in tubes, pipes, and billows like you see above.  Not to mention long 3D looking boxes, etc.  Below are a few more examples.  Expect a tutorial in the next couple days.

There’s No Place Like Springfield by Grant Friedman, 2008

Designer Grant Friedman, the mind behind the Colorburned design studio and website reveals a mass of beautiful work.  Flowing and organic yet still containing precision and clarity, his work displays all the hallmarks of a pro.  Not only does his site contain great inspiration, but it also contains brushes, tutorials, patterns and more!  Really worth a look!

Alphones Mucha - Passing Wind, 1899

Now here is a set of fantastic turn of the century (the other turn of the century) designs and illustrations.  The one above is for a fan, but there are wine labels, flatware, posters, etc.  Alphones Mucha was a Czech Art Nouveau designer and painter.  His work is clearly distinctive and something that I am sure the great many of you out there have seen.  So ubiquitis in a sense that it is like part of our background.  Well I suppose that because it is!  Really worth a look.

Also it’s good to be back!  Haven’t posted in for ever!

To go with last weeks post about the Sun, here is a wide array of shots, showing our friendly glowing orb in just about every way imaginable.  Truly a sight to behold and there is a lot to be inspired by here.  Lots of reference images for particle and noise effects, not to mention color schemes.  Very nice.

Normally high speed photography is something I avoid, just because it always seems so redundant. However this is a nice collection of mostly well composed and thought out images. Of course they can’t avoid the cliche images (the egg, milk drop, etc.) but at least there is no bullet card in this one! Really though there are some very nice looking images here, nice food for inspiration.

Lake Carnegie Australia

Environmental Graffiti has compiled a list of beautiful, abstract images of earth as seen by satellites. Many of these images look alien in origin but all are simple satellite images. Delicious and a lot to absorb.

‘Pitch’ by Jesse van Dijk

Dutch digital artist Jesse van Dijk’s portfolio is ripe with delicious imagery. Primarily focused on the sci-fi/fantasy end of the spectrum, he also has created some beautiful matte painting work as well as work seated in the present. Utilizing a painterly style he creates well detailed and imaginative worlds with the stroke of his tablet. He’s also been kind enough to create several ‘making of’ articles that illustrate some of his techniques. They can be found here and here.

From ‘Silent World’ series by Michael Kenna

British photographer Michael Kenna’s series of beautiful photographs captures a world without people. Nearly every image is a stunning example of composition and subject choice. Here he reveals a world without us in it, just the environment we live in and create. Fantastic.
