Californian David van Brinks delicious web site is full of fantastic goodies he has been so kind to provide. Not only does he create custom After Effects plug-ins but he has a number of scripts for AE, as well as a wonderful set of Quicktime Terminal tools. This site is a great resource - thanks a bunch David.

The Internet Archive’s Movie Archive is a fantastic resource for short clips and feature length content. There is a vast array of material here, covering many different types, from film and television work to VJ clip collections, news, educational and much more. This is a great resource for those seeking inspiration and for getting an idea of some of the many different ways moving pictures have been captured and displayed over the years.

Dale Bradshaw at Creative Workflow Hacks has been experimenting with a cool expression using After Effects CS3’s sampleImage(); command. He uses the brightness values of a given pixel in a pre-existing animation to select a particular ASCII character. It’s a pretty cool idea and one that I’ve been wanting to experiment with for awhile. It’s good to see someone actually get around to doing it! Inspires me to make my own take on it.

‘Pitch’ by Jesse van Dijk

Dutch digital artist Jesse van Dijk’s portfolio is ripe with delicious imagery. Primarily focused on the sci-fi/fantasy end of the spectrum, he also has created some beautiful matte painting work as well as work seated in the present. Utilizing a painterly style he creates well detailed and imaginative worlds with the stroke of his tablet. He’s also been kind enough to create several ‘making of’ articles that illustrate some of his techniques. They can be found here and here.

Wave of the Future - Unknown

I don’t know who created this one, but it’s pretty splendid in it’s 80’s feel. This is a look that I think might be due for a resurgence in the coming years. That pixelated blend of old and new, coupled with some vector grid-work 3D renderings creates a cool nostalgia feel that feels like the 80’s without the bad hair all those damn hot colors that came at the end. If you happen to know who created this poster please let me know, I’d love to see some other stuff.

Shenzen Bao’an International Airport

Scheduled for final completion in 2035 (with intermediate results in intervening years) the Shenzen Bao’an International Airport will be a stunning achievement in airport design. With such a gorgeous and sleek look this terminal beckons the future with it’s use of light and modern architecture. Being an American, this makes med sad in a way that the U.S. has such an antiquated feel to much of it’s transportation infrastructure. Combine this airport with the aircraft designs I posted about a few weeks ago and we really may have a vision of the future. From a design standpoint this airport really stands out as something to look forward to in the future and be inspired by today. Can’t wait for the future.

From ‘Silent World’ series by Michael Kenna

British photographer Michael Kenna’s series of beautiful photographs captures a world without people. Nearly every image is a stunning example of composition and subject choice. Here he reveals a world without us in it, just the environment we live in and create. Fantastic.

I’m nearly speechless with the beauty of these shots. Cassini-Huygens is the NASA/ESA/ASI space probe whose mission is to study Saturn. It’s been in orbit for awhile and has delivered some stunning imagery (as well as some useful scientific information) of our giant ringed brother. I don’t have words to describe these images, they are beautiful on numerous levels. The composition and crop work of the individual who put these together really makes them shine, and the fact that they are effectively in black and white makes them so much more visceral. Do not miss these!

So here is a beautiful collection of images from the Dark Roasted Blend blog featuring a number of German industrial designer Luigi Colani works. This guy has the future nailed, hopefully it will become a reality. Some wonderful works here and well worth a moment to peruse them.

The Department of Energy has a vast archive of clips relating to the nuclear weapons programs from the 40’s to the 70’s. Unfortunately it includes only small versions of the clips (both size and length) but it does give you a good idea of what’s available. It appears as though the full versions of these clips can be purchased directly from the DoE, but just these short ones give a pretty good idea of the power behind these big bangs. Awesome and disturbing, the release of so much energy looks pretty beautiful from a purely aesthetic point of view. But the reality of the situation only serves to make things that much more interesting.
